One man died and another was seriously injured when a product tanker exploded as it readied to depart a terminal in Bangkok.

One man died and three were seriously injured when a product tanker exploded as it readied to depart a terminal in the Thai capital of Bangkok.

The Thai-flagged product tanker SMOOTH SEA 2, arrived on the evening of March 8 at IRPC Co. pier. A Thai Petroleum and Petrochemical Company in Samut Prakan Bangkok. Travelling from Rayong, with a cargo of gasoil and diesel oil.

Thus, in the morning of March 9, while berthed, it suffered an explosion with fire on the cargo deck. Unfortunately, three crew was injured and taken to hospital while one went missing.

Note that, the vessel was about to leave Bangkok after offloading the cargo when erupted following some gas in the tank or a tank explosion due to negligence.

The ship was carrying around 1.8m litres of gasoil and 1.3m litres of diesel. Nevertheless, the firemen took about one hour to bring the fire under control.

Local police have suggested around 200 households nearby could be in line to claim compensation for the explosion. Officials reported that they do not currently know how much oil remains on board after the tanker exploded.

Footage from the Thai Navy shows the moment the huge explosion hit the 3,000-dwt vessel amidships on Wednesday, sending a plume of orange flames and black smoke into the sky.
