The first vessel with verified SEEMP Part III in the world
DNV presented Arcadia Shipmanagement Co Ltd. with a certificate recognizing their vessel Aegean Myth. Particularly, as the first vessel globally to have a SEEMP III manual. The Ship Operational Carbon Intensity Plan (SEEMP Part III), is part of IMO’s strategy to reduce shipping’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Thus, a verified Part III must be kept on board from 1 January 2023.
SEEMP (Part I, II, III) – Everything you need to know
What is SEEMP? From the year 2023, the ships subject to the CII rating will have to develop a SEEMP Part 3 (III) on or before 31 December 2022.
The SEEMP Part III, finalized with the latest amendments to MARPOL Annex VI and the associated Guidelines at MEPC 78 last month. It requires ship operators to monitor, report, and verify CO2 emissions annually for all vessels larger than 5,000 GT. It is a ship-specific document, a dynamic and regularly updated three-year implementation plan. Describing how a vessel will achieve the required Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) over the next three years, with yearly targets, procedures for self-evaluation and improvement, and a corrective action plan in case of an inferior rating.

Tools for SEEMP III
Classification societies are constantly developing tools to assist the industry in complying with new measures. Hence, DNV recently released the free SEEMP III Generator tool for its customers. The system can propose energy efficiency measures and help vessel operators reach the required CII. It can also help to reduce paperwork and can be used by both ship managers and third-party consultants working on behalf of DNV DCS customers.
The Carbon Intensity Indicator, CII calculation is one of the top hits in the past month. We debunk its complexity by simplifying the procedures based on IMO guidelines. Specifically, the operational measure accompanying EEXI is the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), which evaluates the transport efficiency of vessels. Particularly, it will be applicable to all cargo, RoPax, and cruise ships above 5,000 GT. Based on the result, the vessel will have a rating between A – E.
